Every playable character
Abilities are fixed: a hero always moves things the same way, and puzzles test how you combine them. The table merges the developer's announcements with what three hands-on previews and reviews describe. Voice actors come from the developer's cast announcement of October 1, 2026.
| Character | World | Ability | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| The Queen | Overworld | Pushes blocks; explores the hub that links every world | Introduces block pushing in the opening (PlayStation Blog). Voiced by Emily O'Brien. |
| Warrior (Valens) | North | Pushes blocks and crystals | Clears lanes. Voiced by Liam O'Brien. |
| Thief (Tif) | North | Pulls blocks; cannot push | Gets objects out of corners the Warrior can't reach. |
| Wizard (Isidore) | North | Swaps places with the block or character in his line of sight | Teleports past blockades. Voiced by Darin De Paul. |
| Bard | North | Charms monsters in an area around the Bard | Joins after the first three (PlayStation Blog). Voiced by Anjali Bhimani. |
| Cleric | North | Immune to monster attacks; protects adjacent allies | Called "Priestess" in the PlayStation Blog preview (see names). |
| Druid | North | Transmutes blocks, turning parts of the board into things you can move | Voiced by Matthew Waterson. |
| Trader | East | Swaps places with his reflection in magic mirrors; can also swap objects | Later you push mirrors, send objects through them and create clones that all move together. |
| Explorer | West | Carries gems that power coloured beams; gains the beam's power while standing in it | See beam powers. |
| Sailor | South | Pushes giant skipping stones across water and rides lily pads; redirects rivers | Marooned and travelling island to island. Voiced by Erica Luttrell. |
| The talking boat | — | Not described in our sources | Steam lists "a talking boat" among the playable heroes, but no review or preview we found explains what it does. We will add it once there is a reliable description. |
Sources: the Steam store page; the developer's announcements "New Trailer – Explore the Realm" (Sept 23) and "A Cast of Unlikely Heroes" (Oct 1); the PlayStation Blog hands-on (July 21); reviews by Push Square, GamingBolt and Nintendo Life. The Druid's ability comes from two sources: "transmutes blocks" (PlayStation Blog) and "change the environment into movable blocks" (Nintendo Life).
Names that differ between sources
- Cleric vs Priestess vs priest: the developer's announcement says Cleric, the PlayStation Blog preview says Priestess, and Steam players write "priest". It is the same support hero.
- Warrior vs Fighter: some Steam threads say "Fighter" for the hero who pushes. The developer and the cast list say Warrior.
- West world name: the developer calls the West "The Promise". Push Square, many players and the achievement ("Finish the initial Beamcasters campaign") call it Vault of the Beamcasters or just Beamcasters. Both names mean the same place.
- Character names: the PlayStation Blog names the first three heroes Valens, Tif and Isidore. The developer's materials mostly use the class names.
Monsters and hazards
There is no combat. Monsters are puzzle pieces with fixed rules (PlayStation Blog hands-on).
| Hazard | What it does | How players handle it |
|---|---|---|
| Goblin | Kills a hero on an adjacent square | The Bard charms monsters; the Cleric is immune and protects heroes next to it |
| Fire beast | Breathes fire along its line of sight | Stay out of the line of fire. Monsters can be manipulated into attacking each other |
| Monster gates | Stay shut until the room's monsters are dealt with | Treat clearing the monsters as part of the route, not a side task |
| Water / pits | Block walking; stones skip over water in the South | A Steam player found that a crystal rock dropped into a pit fills it and makes solid ground (October 11) |
The "how players handle it" column combines the PlayStation Blog's description of these rules with Steam forum advice. It is general, not a solution to any specific puzzle.
Beam powers in the West
In The Promise (Beamcasters), gems power generators that project coloured beams. While the Explorer stands inside a beam, he gets that beam's power. The developer lists three powers: passing through solid walls, smashing boulders, and long-distance teleports. GamingBolt also mentions a beam that lets you push objects, and a Steam player describes one that opens red square blocks.
| Pattern inside the beam | Power (player report) |
|---|---|
| Square-shaped clouds | Opens red square obstacles |
| Smoke rings | Walk through walls |
| Zig-zags | Teleport two steps away |
| Blue beam | Shows an arm icon above your head; two arms when you stand in two blue beams |
Colour-blind players: no colour-blind mode has been announced. Players have asked for one on Steam since June 29, and a tritanope player asked again on October 12. The pattern inside each beam is the most reliable cue. The table above comes from a single Steam player (October 12) and has not been confirmed by the developer. Another player reports that most beam icons above your head are currently bugged, and only the blue beam's icon shows.
How abilities combine later
After the first campaigns, the Gold Rooms merge worlds, and the heroes start sharing boards. The developer's examples are the Explorer's beams with the Trader's mirrors, and the moving crew with the Sailor's skipping stones. Push Square mentions using skipping stones to carry gems to beams. Steam players are already discussing combined areas such as "Heroes and Mirrors" and "Reflected Beams". In those areas, one character's power often depends on another world's object. For example, a mirror can affect a crystal rock that looks like it does nothing. The walkthrough's Gold Room section shows the order players unlock them.
